Softening of Self

A Yogic and Ayurvedic Self Healing Yoga Teacher Training

Softening of Self: A Yogic and Ayurvedic Self Healing Yoga Teacher Training, aims to inspire, cultivate curiosity and prepare students to step into the roll as yoga teacher. This program is intended to create a deeper relationship to self using introspection, asana, meditation, and other methodologies. This deeper relationship to self is meant to inspire the trainees to continue their inner work and relationship with the entirety of the yoga practice, as well as inspire them to carry these teachings forward to their future students should they choose to teach.

Intention

The program begins with several weekends of history and philosophy to lay a foundation of respect and reverence for the traditional teachings of yoga. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the 8 Limbs of yoga are discussed in depth to broaden the understanding of what yoga is and how we can practice more than just yoga asana. These foundations will come up again and again throughout the program to reinforce them in the trainees and will be woven into most aspects of the program to follow.

As students continue to move deeper inward, they are given an opportunity to explore the sister science of yoga, Ayurveda. This is an important additional to the program because we believe in a holistic approach to nurturing the self. That means not only will our trainees learn about the practice of yoga, but they will also have a baseline knowledge of the other ways we can understand and support our bodies through life from an Ayurvedic perspective. There will be a large, individual project based on Ayurveda and students will be supported throughout the process individually and collectively.

The program offers insight into the many different ways one can practice asana, pranayama, dharana and dhyana. We will cover several different methodologies such as single pointed meditation, yoga sequencing to a peak pose, and so many more. The reason for covering many different techniques and methods of practice is so that the trainees have an opportunity to explore and be curious. This allows trainees to discover what practices they appreciate and want to focus on when they begin teaching, what practices they want to adopt into their own life and what practices are not for them or their teaching style while is a supportive environment.

This yoga teacher training focuses on asana much later in the program than most because yoga goes so much deeper than just the physical practice. When we look at the Yoga Sutras less than 2% of the text talks about asana and when asana is discussed it isn’t discussed in the way that we treat asana here in the Western world. Once we do get to asana, the trainees will have a strong relationship with the practice of yoga as a whole, rather than just some of the parts. They will also be taught how to create a safe, inclusive environment for any individual who may come to their classes. There will be several conversations about holding a trauma informed space and how to create yoga classes to meet everyone where they are, even if they are all at different levels or have different abilities.

The core of this program is a journey of the self and from that deep knowledge and love of self comes the teacher. Trainees begin with their journey inward and as they continue to journey inward, they also begin to teach others and guide them on their path inward, too.
